The Stanley Awards weekend November 13 and 14
Work is progressing well behind the scenes with the Stanley Award weekend. The chairman of the Stanleys committee Mark Knight has done a great job so far and we look forward to the Stanleys in Melbourne. The ACA committee is meeting via Skype next Tuesday to put the finishing touches to organising. So keep those dates free. We will publish booking details very soon. If you’re in Melbourne you can help drum up interest too. Email the ACA is you want to help out.
ACA Committee casual vacancy
ACA committee member Terry Dunnett in Perth has resigned for personal reasons. The ACA thanks him for his contribution and we all wish him well and look forward to seeing more of his great work. As a result the ACA committee has a casual vacancy. Would you be interested in jumping on board? We’re not a bad bunch and the ACA could sure do with your help. The current board is Jules Faber, Jason Chatfield, Peter Broelman, Cathy Wilcox, Mark Knight, Ian McCall, Grant Brown, Kerry Anne Brown and Mike Nicholas. If you want more information just send Secretary Peter an email. The current term is until the end of 2016.
Inkspot
The ACA is looking for a volunteer to steer Inkspot. As you probably know we haven’t had an Inkspot in 2015 yet. It is a big job and is suited to someone with the drive and energy to kick it along to serve the ACA’s members. If you think you’re a dab hand at putting something like Inkspot together send the ACA an Email. Inkspot is very important and while emails are nice nothing compares to getting an informative newsletter in the mail.
ACA NSW function September 13
Christophe Granet is organising the next ACA function in Sydney on September 13 so save the date! You can RSVP now by emailing Christophe now 🙂
City Of Ryde Art Society John Thom Award
This year The City of Ryde Art Society is introducing a new section for Cartoon Artists. The prize money will be $1000. I am sending you a hard copy today of the entry form with the different sections. The Cartoon Award is the John Thom award and it should not be political in subject. We would love some entries from your members, our society is in its 55th Year of Exhibitions. It would be in the interest of your members to know about this new award, so they may wish to enter an illustration. Contact the City of Ryde Art Society via www.cityofrydeartsociety.com.
FAST Art Competition
The FAST Art Competition is a competition for all ages, with a special category for cartoonists. FAST Art entries must be created within a 24 hour period, and the site is Parramatta Road, Annandale, Sydney. The cartooning category was introduced to offer cartoonists an opportunity to showcase their skills in representing the subject matter of “Parramatta Road, Annandale” which includes the many shopkeepers and individuals that people the pubs, and cafes along the strip.
ASA National Writers’ Congress program
Friday 11 & Saturday 12 September
Luna Park Conference Centre, Sydney
The full program of the ASA National Writers’ Congress is now available to download at www.asauthors.org.
The Congress will feature a keynote address from internationally best-selling author and former President of the US Authors Guild, Scott Turow.
“Authors around the globe, especially in the developed world, face similar perils,” says Turow. “Book piracy, dwindling retailing, and the corporate behemoths who devise constant strategies to take for free what authors have spent years creating.”
Multi award-winning journalist and author David Marr will present a further keynote, speaking on the need for story. “Whatever the problems with technology, money and publishing, writers can look to the future confident that we’ll always be part of the solution,” says Marr. “Even books may disappear but the world can’t do without storytellers.”
Other program highlights include:
- Acclaimed Aboriginal artist Bronwyn Bancroft, Australian children’s laureate Jackie French and multi award-winning author Libby Gleeson, among others, discussing Australian content and how it’s taught in schools and universities (or isn’t);
- Greens MP Adam Bandt, internationally published author Kate Forsyth and others on building an author-supportive book industry;
- Celebrated author of more than 40 books for children, teenagers and adults John Marsden on the readers of tomorrow;

WaveChat app
“I am writing as we have recently launched a new chat app, WaveChat, and we are about to launch a Sticker Market for our users. The Sticker Market will be designed to allow artists the opportunity to sell their art in “Sticker Packs” – giving the artists an on-going royalty stream, while giving users access to unique and wonderful sticker art. We will be launching the Market in mid-late September, so we are very keen to start working with artists who may like to use the market as a source of income, and I was hoping we may be able to alert members of the ACA to this opportunity? Artists can create as many “Packs” as you like with different themes, colours and styles. There will be two different pack sizes – 10 pack and 25 pack. The packs will be sold at USD$0.99 and US$1.99 respectively.
Artists will be paid 25 per cent of the face value of the pack per sale. If you would like some further information, I can forward you the technical specifications, or if you have any questions, please feel free to contact me at any time.
Kind regards,
Emma Stirling
