The ACA is sad to confirm that one of Australia's most revered political cartoonists, Geoff Hook OAM, passed away this morning. Sincere condolences to Pauline, family and friends. He will be fondly missed.
Geoffrey (Jeff) Raynor Hook OAM (1928-2018)
Commencing work at The Sun News-Pictorial in 1964 Hook was born in Hobart and started his career on The Mercury. After moving to Melbourne, he began hiding his "trademark" fishhook in his cartoons. He retired in 1993 while continuing to contribute to The Sunday Herald Sun till 2000. In 1987, he won the Stanley Award for Humorous Illustration and at the International Cartoon Festival at Knokke-Heist, Belgium, the Best Political Cartoon award in 1998 and the Best Press Cartoon in 1991. ‘Jeff’ was awarded a Stanley for lifetime achievement in 1998, and a lifetime achievement award from the Melbourne Press Club in 2009. In 2012 he was awarded an OAM for "service to the print media as a political and social commentator, and as a cartoonist". Geoff was inducted into the Australian Cartoonists Hall Of Fame at the 2016 Stanley Awards.
