The Australian Financial Review’s David Rowe has been crowned Cartoonist Of The Year at the Australian Cartoonists Association’s 40th Annual Stanley Awards at the Museum Of Australian Democracy in Canberra Saturday night.
Rowe’s Gold Stanley three-peat didn’t stop there. He was also rewarded with Bronze Stanleys for Caricaturist and Editorial/Political Cartoonist.
Finalists for the Gold Stanley were Paul Harvey, Mark Knight, Judy Nadin, David Pope and Cathy Wilcox.
Seven other Bronze Stanleys were decided by ACA members: Animation Cartoonist - Edmund Iffland, Book Illustrator – Dean Rankine, Comic Book Artists – tie between Dean Rankine and Paul Mason, Comic Strip Cartoonist – Ian Jones (Bushy Tales), Event Cartoonist – Steve Panozzo, Illustrator – Judy Nadin, and Single Gag Cartoonist – Judy Horacek.
The Jim Russell Award (Silver Stanley) for Outstanding Contribution to Australian Cartooning was awarded to Nat Karmichael for his devotion to the craft and in particular comic book genres.
Three cartoonists were inducted into the Australian Cartooning Hall of Fame, bringing the tally to an incredible 40 since its inception. The three are Arthur Mailey, Unk White and Gary Clark.
The 40th Stanley Awards, hosted by Peter Berner, coincided with MOAD’s Behind The Lines exhibition where Megan Herbert was declared their Cartoonist Of The Year, and the Comic Arts Awards of Australia.
