Spot Cartoons

Postby M Atherton » Mon Nov 16, 2009 11:16 am

Hi

I've been looking at the recommended rates on the ACA website and was just wondering what exactly a Spot cartoon or illustration is defined as being?
I was also curious about the page divisions (Half page, full page etc.) since a full page could be anything from A Full A4 page to something a bit larger like A3 and how this would translate to digital artwork where the size isn't set in stone (especially if we're talking vector artwork)? Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you

Spot gag is a single panel cartoon that usually sits within a story/article or just above. These types of illustration tend to be small in size as opposed to being a half or quarter page.

These rates are a basic guide for you to judge how much you should be personally charging. They aren't concrete rates that you adhere by. They've been based on suggested rates by the MEAA. If you have someone requesting an A3 page regardless of vector or bitmap, then it's up to you how much time you think you'll spend in preparation. Personally I would take the suggested rate of A4 and double it, then add some more on top to cover for any corrections to be made.

All the half page, full page, spot etc really only apply to books, papers & magazines, where they pay for the amount of space it takes up. Generally these days the magazines will dictate the price and you decide whether you want the gig.

All other work is really "per project" and you'll need to ascertain the usage and the time taken to produce to work out costs.
