Jim Russell Award for contribution to Australian cartooning
Norm Hetherington (Mr Squiggle)

Freelance political cartoonist, Adelaide-based Peter Broelman, has been awarded Cartoonist of the Year at the 25th annual Stanley Awards, presented in Sydney on November 14, 2009. Broelman, whose cartoons appear in a host of regional newspapers across Australia said he was really chuffed to receive the award, which came on the back of the Stanley Award for Editorial/Political Cartoonist earlier in the evening.

After stepping onto the stage at Sydney's Darling Harbour Convention Centre, Broelman thanked the global financial crisis, the outbreak of swine flu, asylum seekers and his editors for "not giving me a hard time". Among the other cartoonists honoured with Stanleys were Brisbane-based Gary Clark for his comic strip "Swamp", Mebourne's Matt Golding for his single gag cartoons, freelance illustrators Anton Emdin (illustrator), David Follett (media graphic artist) and John Spooner of The Age for his caricature

In an emotional tribute, Mr. Squiggle creator and former Bulletin cartoonist, 88-year-old Norman Hetherington, was awarded the Jim Russell Award for his outstanding contribution of Australian cartooning. The announcement earned Hetherington a unanimous standing ovation and a steady queue of autograph hunters once he had returned to his table. The Stanley Awards are named after cartoonist Stan Cross who created, in 1933, what is considered to be Australia's funniest cartoon, "For Gorsake, Stop Laughing, This is Serious!"

The awards dinner capped a jam-packed weekend for cartoonists, which included talks by famed political cartoonist Pat Oliphant, MAD Magazine caricaturist Tom Richmond and an exhibition opening. The Stanleys are presented by the Australian Cartoonists' Association, which was formed in 1924, making it the world's oldest professional body for cartoonists in the world. On the night, ACA President, Jules Faber, announced the first inductees to Australian cartoonings Hall of Fame. The inductees included Ginger Meggs creator, Jim Bancks, Stan Cross, Will Dyson, Percy Leason, George Finey and living legend Pat Oliphant.
